When you take good care of your body, it takes good care of you. If you play your cards right, you can live a long fruitful life without illness or disabilities. But for now, eating plenty of nutrition in college will help you to maintain good focus and energy. If you’re committed to making your college years as healthy as possible, then consider the following!

Before All Else, Eat Right

One of the most important things about maintaining a healthy body is ensuring that whatever you put into it is healthy. You are what you eat, so if you eat a lot of unhealthy foods, then you can only expect that you too will become unhealthy. It’s important to add foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals to your everyday diet, especially for breakfast. If you’re always on the go, you can pick up granola bars, fruit or a smoothie, so no excuses!

Get Plenty of Exercise

This is an obvious one, especially with many freshmen graduating 15 to 20 lbs heavier than what they were starting college. You can get your workout on at a gym, in your dorm or apartment, and/or incorporate more walking into your daily routine. You can try walking or biking to school and to your classes across the campus. This alone could possibly add between 20 to 60 minutes of additional exercise daily.

Go to Bed on Time

You need to get sufficient rest if you want to operate efficiently each day. Falling asleep during lectures and study hall isn’t a good look and it will only cause you to flunk. Make sure you create a work-life balance, so that your social life doesn’t negatively affect your school life. Although the college experience is about interacting with fellow students, the most important thing is to graduate! So make sure you head to bed on time, so that you can get at least seven hours of rest every night.

Avoid Smoking

This is a nasty habit that many students pick up after high school and in college. It’s a very dangerous recreational drug that can be difficult to quit. Not only does it blacken your lungs and increase your chances of cancer, it also aggravates your nerves. When you can’t get a cigarette when you want one, then you become edgy. The only thing you need to be on edge about is passing your exams!

Stay Away from Caffeine and Sugar

This is easier said than done, with soda and coffee machines laden throughout most college campuses. Not to mention, many students feel they have to have their morning cup of coffee in order to function. Truth be told, caffeine and sugar only gives you false energy that comes crashing down within hours. This leaves you relying on soda and coffee throughout the day, every day. Instead, get a pick-me-up from fresh fruits and veggies. Gobble down a high-nutrition fruit smoothie if you have to.
